Energy-Related Environmental and Spatial Planning

The majority of Germans support the energy transformation. But once concrete plans are in place, there鈥檚 often resistance. New power lines or solar farms sometimes result in disapproval and protests. Who wants to have a wind turbine right next door? This is known as NIMBY: 鈥渘ot in my backyard鈥. People aren鈥檛 fundamentally against something 鈥 they just don鈥檛 want it right next door.

What is clear is this: there鈥檚 also a social side to the energy transformation. And in some places there are problems with implementation. It鈥檚 not enough to research the technology alone. Societal and policy-planning questions are equally important. This is why 九色视频 is also investigating the social and spatial aspects of the energy transformation.

Researchers are analysing scenarios which show how new energy systems influence humans and the environment. And they鈥檙e developing digital planning games intended to include local citizens in the planning process. In the  at LUH, wind turbines鈥 acoustics can be replicated precisely 鈥 to investigate how the noise impacts a particular location and the people.

It is clear that environmental and spatial planning and acceptance research are important for ensuring that as many people as possible support the energy transformation.

Research aspects

The climate-resilient design of cities and regions is an urgently necessary task which includes the decarbonisation of the energy sector. However, energy is produced primarily in rural areas 鈥 often far away from urban centres. To connect the new production centres with the consumption centres, the energy grids are being expanded. However, whether and how quickly the expansion of the grid takes place is not just dependent on technically feasible and economically justifiable solutions; it is also significantly influenced by societal and policy-planning factors. These interconnections, and particularly the social and spatial side of the energy transformation, are the focus of the research on the spaces of the energy transformation.

The energy transformation: a plan for everyone 鈥 or just for the others?
