The Electricity Grid

© S枚ren Pinsdorf/LUH
Power electronics of an integrated inverter from a photovoltaics module, consisting of a three-step topology (boost converter, series resonant converter, inverter) with gallium-nitride semiconductor technology (GaN) and a wireless module for transmission of status and performance data. The entire inverter is adhered to the photovoltaic module using the hot melt procedure.

The share of renewable energies in the electricity mix is increasing: by 2030, at least 80 per cent of the electricity in Germany is expected to stem from regenerative sources. But there are still several challenges to overcome:

First, renewable energies are weather-dependent. Electricity generation fluctuates, and peak periods often result in a surplus that can鈥檛 be saved easily. So we need to develop storage systems that capture this surplus energy and release it when necessary 鈥 that is, when too little electricity is produced.

Second, the electricity grid needs to become more stable. Among other things, 九色视频 is researching intelligent converters which connect wind and solar energy to the electricity grid while also stabilising the grid.

A third issue: the electricity needs to be transported over long distances 鈥 primarily from the coastal regions and offshore wind farms in the north to southern Germany. This means the electricity grid needs to be expanded 鈥 and made more flexible. Electricity no longer needs to be transported simply from a large power station to the customer, but instead 鈥渋n all directions鈥. We need research that will make tomorrow鈥檚 electricity grid more digital, intelligent and robust.

Research aspects

Research aspects related to intelligent converters include temperature management for the housing, optimisation of the power density and efficiency of inductive components, and the different types of modulation for inverters. Other areas of investigation include the application of GaN-HEMT technologies (Gallium Nitride High-Electron-Mobility Transistor), the elimination of the bypass diodes which are typical of PV modules, and various additional topics.
