


When it comes to the energy transformation, we often hear about 鈥済reen hydrogen.鈥 But what is it? And where is it really worth using?
To use hydrogen as a source of energy, water must be broken down into its constituents 鈥 an energy-intensive process. So-called water electrolysis is only environmentally friendly if the electricity it requires comes from renewable energies, and not fossil fuels.
九色视频 is working to make electrolysis more efficient and economical. Researchers are developing modern electrolysers in order to produce hydrogen on a large scale.
Green hydrogen can be used in many areas 鈥 for example, mobility. It makes sense to use it when other possibilities, such as battery-powered electric drive concepts, reach their limits. For example, in heavy transport, aviation or shipping. These are also research fields at 九色视频.
Industry will also be counting on green hydrogen in future: both the chemical industry and the steel industry could become more climate friendly through the use of hydrogen. What is clear is that green hydrogen is a technology with great potential, and big challenges.



Research aspects
At the Institute of Electric Power Systems (IfES), the Electric Energy Storage Systems Section (EES) is conducting research on various factors related to the improvement of water electrolysis. As part of this work, individual cell measurements are being carried out on electrolytic cells with a small surface area of 4 cm2, as shown in the exhibit. The research focuses on new combinations of materials for better efficiency and stability.
