Preliminary examination documentation (VPD) from uni-assist

© Christian A. Schröder/LUH

The preliminary review documentation (VPD) from uni-assist is a certificate evaluation that checks and evaluates the eligibility of applications from non-EU countries for admission to a degree programme at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ (LUH). It indicates whether your qualifications (school leaving certificate, bachelor's degree) enable you to take up a degree programme or whether additional qualifications are required (e.g. an assessment test at the Studienkolleg to be admitted to a bachelor's degree programme). In addition, your grades are converted into the German grading system.

Do I need a VPD for all degree programmes?

For non-EU applications, you will usually always need preliminary examination documentation. There are a few exceptions for some Master's degree programmes. For all Bachelor's programmes and for the state examination at LUH, a VPD is mandatory for your application. A VPD is also required for applications to the Studienkolleg. Please check whether your desired degree programme requires a VPD for your application.

How do I apply for a VPD?

  • Step 1: Register with uni-assist
    • Register at
    • Enter your personal details such as name, address, date of birth, etc.
  • Step 2: Apply for VPD
    • Select ‘Bachelor all subjects’ for a Bachelor's application or ‘Master all subjects’ for a Master's application.
    • Create your application.
  • Step 3: Upload the required documents
    • Upload scans of your documents (certificates, CV, passport, etc.) including German or English translations to the uni-assist portal.
    • Do not send original documents to uni-assist; certified copies are also not required (however, LUH may request these at a later date).
  • Step 4: Check and submit your application
    • Check all the information before submitting and make sure that you have filled everything in correctly.
    • Pay the processing fee (€75 for the first application, €30 for each additional application in the same semester).
    • You can check the status of your application and whether your payment has been received via your online account at uni-assist. Uni-assist will send you an email to confirm that your documents have been received.
    • Please note the processing time: 4 to 8 weeks

With the uni-assist database ‘Check: Hochschulzugang’, you can quickly and easily find out whether your certificates qualify you to study in Germany.

Admission requirements – yes or no?
  • If you meet the admission requirements, you will receive a VPD from uni-assist by email. In rare cases, if your university entrance qualification is unclear and at the discretion of the university, you will receive a substitute certificate from uni-assist. With the VPD (or the replacement certificate), you can apply directly to ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ within the application period.
  • If you do not have admission authorisation, you will receive a message from uni-assist. In this case, you cannot apply to ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ.

Important information and FAQ

  • Does applying for the VPD replace the application to ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ?
  • No. Once you have received a valid VPD from uni-assist, you must use it to apply for your desired degree programme via the LUH online application portal within the application deadline.
  • Is it possible to apply to LUH online only?
  • Yes, the application process at LUH is completely online. This means that you can upload your documents online – you do not need to send any original documents or certified copies.
  • Can I also use the VPD from another university for my application?
  • No. We only accept VPDs for the LUH.
  • Can I use a Bachelor's VPD for a Master's application?
  • No, a Master's application is only possible with a Master's VPD. However, a Master's VPD also allows you to apply for a Bachelor's programme.
  • Can I apply for several Master's programmes at the same time with one VPD?
  • Yes, that is possible.
  • How long is my VPD valid?
  • Your VPD is valid for a maximum of two years for an application to LUH.
  • If my certificates are not sufficient to start a bachelor's degree programme, do I have to apply to the Studienkolleg?
  • No. LUH will forward your application to the Studienkolleg. It is not possible to apply directly to the Studienkolleg.

Exceptions to the VPD requirement

Applications without a VPD are only possible in the following cases:

  • You have already received admission to the desired degree programme at LUH.
  • You are currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's programme at LUH (change of programme, double degree). Exchange students, on the other hand, need a VPD to apply for a regular degree programme.
  • You are officially recognised as a refugee in Germany and can prove this in your application.
  • You have a school or bachelor's degree from the EU or the European Economic Area.
  • You have an European citizenship.
  • You are applying for a higher semester and have already started the same degree programme at another German university. In this case, it is advisable to request an individual assessment in advance.
  • You have successfully completed the assessment test at a German preparatory college (Studienkolleg).
