Short Description
Sports is offered as a second subject (or supplementary teaching subject) within the bachelor's programme Special Needs Education. As first subject Special Needs Education is studied. The first two semesters are reserved for the contents of the first subject. The courses of the second subject will be added by the third semester.
The general study objective is to acquire thorough specialist knowledge and the ability to produce academic work using the methods involved in the subject. After completing this degree, students should be able to work in a school environment (after completing the subsequent Master鈥檚 degree) or in a non-school-based setting. Students must pass the assessment of aptitude in order to be admitted to Sports as a second subject in the Bachelor鈥檚 degree programme in Special Needs Education.
Students gain a differentiated understanding of teaching methodological issues and problems in various contexts (not only school-based contexts but also those with a non-school-based perspective). In the process, great emphasis is placed on knowledge and insight into sports science, teaching methodology and special needs education as well as practical sports skills and abilities. The competencies that students should have gained by the end of the programme include knowledge from the areas of physical education, social sciences and the natural sciences at the intersection of special needs education issues. They gain skills and abilities in a wide range of disciplines relating to the teaching and methods of sports.
Course Content
- Courses combining theory and practice (team games, racket and net sports, individual sports, other sporting disciplines)
- Foundations of sports science
- Sports theory in the humanities and natural sciences
- Teaching methodology courses (e.g. dealing with heterogeneous groups, the effects of the media in sports, psychomotricity)
Course Structure
The course sequence offers students a wide range of compulsory elective options that is so diverse that it cannot be illustrated by a specific example. A sample study plan is available to help students plan their course sequence:

- An interest in dealing with young people and adolescents (with or without special needs)
- An interest in sports science issues in the natural sciences and humanities in connection with special needs education aspects
- Basic practical sports skills and abilities
Career Opportunities
In the subject of Sports, students have the opportunity to gain practical experience thanks to cooperative activities with social and educational facilities, sports clubs, sports medicine institutes and sports federations. However, the main area of activity is the teaching profession. As an alternative to a career in schooling, which requires completion of a Master鈥檚 degree, graduates have the option of working for sports federations, health insurance companies, fitness studios, as freelance trainers or in open youth work and social work. Alternatively, graduates may choose to work in the special needs education specialisation.

Admission Requirements
The Bachelor鈥檚 degree programme in special needs education generally is admission restricted.
As second subject some subjects in the Bachelor鈥檚 degree programme in special needs education are restricted (Applied Linguistics (non-school-based), German Studies (school subject: German), History, Arts, Music, Social Studies and Science ("Sachkunde") and Sports (school subject: Physical Education) and others are admission-free (Protestant Theology (school subject: Protestant Religious Education), Catholic Theology (school subject: Catholic Religious Education) and Mathematics).
Please note that the aptitude test for the subject sport is an application requirement. It must be available at the latest on the 15th of July of each year (cut-off date) for the winter semester. This applies to study beginners as well as to students resuming their studies and transfer students.
The exact admission requirements can be found in the admission regulations and in the rules for the determination of special suitability for the subject sport:
Application Deadlines
1 June 鈥� 15 July of the year for the winter semester
- First-year students (application for the 1st semester) can only apply for the winter semester.
- Students resuming their studies and transfer students (application for a higher semester) can also apply for the summer semester (1 December - 15 January).
Requirements for applications from non-EU countries:
- A VPD from uni-assist OR a passed assessment test (Feststellungspr眉fung) of a preparatory foundation course (Studienkolleg).
- Applications for the Studienkolleg must be submitted by 15 July.
