-
Course-accompanying examination (VbP)
The course-accompanying examination (VbP) is a kind of ‘container’ for a variety of examination formats. It allows for flexible examination design tailored to the respective courses and their content. A VbP can consist of up to four partial examinations.
At the beginning of each semester, the examiners determine the specific form of the VbP for the respective semester and communicate this. This must be done by 15 October for the winter semester and by 15 April for the summer semester at the latest.
The following list shows the examination formats that are subsumed under the VbP:- AA: Written assignment
- DO: Dokumentation
- ES: Essay
- KO: Colloquium
- KU: In-class test
- KW: Artistic academic presentation
- LÜ: Lab exercise
- MO: Model
- ME: Teaching a group to play music
- MU: Musical performance
- MK: Musical performance by pupils
- PF: Portfolio
- PK: Concert with an educational focus
- PR: Presentation
- PP: Practical examination
- P: Project assignment
- SE: Seminar assignment
- TP: Theatrical performance
- Ü: Practical assessment
- U: Lesson preparation and implementation
- ZD: Graphic representation
Registration and examination periods
As the registration and examination periods are subject to subject-specific requirements or depend on the specific form of examination, you should note three registration periods per semester:
| Winter semester | Summer semester |
| VbP registration period 15 October – 31 October | VbP registration period 15 April – 30 April |
| 1. registration period 15 November – 30 November | 1. registration period 15 May – 31 May |
2. registration period 16 March – 23 March | 2. registration period 16 September– 23 September |
VbP have their own registration and examination period – independent of variants 1 or 2. VbP cannot be repeated in the same semester.
Bachelor's and Master's theses as well as student research projects can be registered at any time.
Problems with exam registration??
If you encounter any problems when registering for your examination, please contact the relevant person at the Academic Examination Office immediately.
Each degree programme determines which option applies to the registration and examination periods for its own examinations.
- Variant 1 provides for one registration period and one long examination period per semester. Examinations can only be taken once per semester. A failed examination can therefore only be retaken in the following semester.
- Variant 2 provides for two shorter registration and examination periods per semester. This means that failed examinations can be retaken in the same semester.
Please note: You can find out which variant applies to your degree programme under ‘Key Dates’. Each degree programme determines which variant applies to its own modules. At the same time, modules from other degree programmes can also be used in your degree programme. In this case, the variant of the degree programme offering the module continues to apply, so that not all modules of your degree programme necessarily have to have the same variant for the registration and examination periods.
Examinations are usually offered twice a year, giving students the opportunity to retake a failed examination every year. Examinations can only be offered in the summer and winter semesters or only in the summer or winter semester respectively.
At LUH, the exam periods and exam registration periods are planned so that you can organise your semester in the best possible way. There are fixed exam periods that cover almost the entire semester, with exceptions for phases such as stays abroad or internships.
-
Exceptions and special forms of examination
- Bachelor's, Master's and student research projects (BA/MA/ST) do not have registration and examination periods, as they can be registered at any time.
- Course-accompanying examinations (VbP) have separate periods.
- Term papers (HA) must always be registered during the first registration period in order to ensure maximum processing time. The exact submission date is determined by the examiner.
- Placement reports (PB) must be registered during the corresponding registration period. They can be completed and submitted outside of the official examination periods.
- Examination dates can usually be found in the HIS POS QIS system for examination registration and on the examination lists for your degree programme. Examiners also provide information about dates and procedures at the beginning of the semester.
- Oral examinations or practical sports presentations - Registration takes place during the designated registration period via . You will then agree on the exact date with the examiners and receive notification at least 14 days before the examination.
- Submission dates for other examination components will be announced after the topics have been issued in consultation with the examiners. For individual forms of examination, you should arrange dates directly.
Registration for examinations
Students register for their examinations online via the , using their LUH-ID (you can find it in your enrolment confirmation).
Exception: Students of the Faculty of Law use the of the faculty's examination office. There you will also find information on examination registration and procedures.
- All examinations (compulsory, compulsory elective and elective modules) must be registered. However, separate applications are required for bachelor's, master's and student research projects. Any special regulations and requirements will be communicated by the faculty.
- Examination offers are entered into the QIS system each semester. Please check with the examiners for information on the examinations offered in later registration periods of the semester.
- After successful registration, you will receive a confirmation by email. It is not possible to register for several examination offers at the same time for one examination. It is recommended that you print out a copy of the registered examinations.
- After the deadline and outside the registration periods, re-registration for an examination is only possible if the previous examination has been completed and graded with a 5.0 or ‘Fail’ or if an excused withdrawal (RTE) or unexcused withdrawal (RTU) has been recorded.
-
Exceptions, missed deadlines and participation with reservation
- Registered examination performances appear on the grade sheet with the note AN.
- All students on the programme can register for examinations in the second examination period, provided that they have not yet passed the examination. It is irrelevant whether the examination was registered for, deregistered for, taken or missed in the first examination period.
- In the event of a missed deadline or late enrolment, an informal application for subsequent registration can be submitted to the examination board, provided that important reasons can be proven. An exception to this are the teacher training programmes, for which the staff of the Leibniz School of Education (LSE) are responsible.
- If the examination is already taking place before you have received a response from the examination board or the examination office, you may participate in it under reserve. To do so, please fill out the form ‘Examination participation under reserve’ and send it to the examiner before the start of the examination.
Withdrawal from examinations
Students at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ can independently withdraw from registered examinations. It is important to adhere to the specific withdrawal deadlines for each type of examination. The deadlines are designed to allow sufficient time for the organisation of examinations and to take individual plans into account.
- Confirmation and withdrawal criteria
Successful withdrawal is automatically confirmed by email when using , and the examination in question is marked ‘AMD’ in the system. For withdrawals via the examiners, the note only appears after the examination has been completed and assessed. - Calculation of deadlines
The deadlines for deregistration are based on the German Civil Code (BGB, Sections 187 (1) and 188 (1)) and are determined in QIS on a calendar day basis, regardless of weekends and public holidays. Upon successful deregistration via QIS, students are removed from the corresponding participation lists.
Withdrawal does not affect the number of examination attempts and is possible for different types of examinations at different deadlines:
-
Withdrawal deadlines according to examination type
- Written examination (K)/multiple-choice written examination
The deadline for withdrawing from this type of examination is seven days before the scheduled examination date. Withdrawals must be made in the QIS examination administration system. - Oral examination (MP)
The deadline for withdrawing from this type of examination is one day before the scheduled examination date. Withdrawals must be made in writing, by email or in a form specified by the examiner. - Practical sports presentation (SP)
The deadline for withdrawing from this type of examination is one day before the scheduled examination date. Withdrawal must be made in writing, by email or in a form specified by the examiner. - course-accompanying examination (VbP)
Withdrawal from this type of examination is possible until the start of the examination. For examinations with a set topic, the examination begins when the topic is announced. A special case is the VbP with several examination parts. Withdrawal is only possible until the start of the first examination part and then applies to all examination parts. Withdrawal must be made in writing, by email or in a form specified by the examiner. - Examinations with submission deadlines
Withdrawal from this type of examination is possible until the start of the examination. For examinations with topic assignment, the examination begins with the assignment of the topic. Withdrawal must be made in writing, by email or in a form specified by the examiner. - Bachelor's/Master's theses
- It is not possible to withdraw from this form of examination, as it begins immediately with the assignment of topics, which takes place directly during the registration process. However, in accordance with § 7 (3) of the PO, students have the option of returning the topic within the first third of the processing time. To do so, please contact your responsible administrator.

Examination administration
-
Resit of examinations
Examination assessments may be offered in a different form if the module provides for several forms of examination in the examination regulations. The form of examination will be announced at the latest at the beginning of the registration period.
-
Change of assessment type
A change in the type of examination after the start or end of the registration period is not permitted. In accordance with Section 6(3) of the examination regulations, the examination format must be determined and communicated by 15 April for the summer semester and 15 October for the winter semester.
-
Language of examination
Depending on the degree programme, examinations are generally offered in German and/or English. Modules taught in English are usually examined in English. Module catalogues provide information on this. In special cases, individual arrangements are possible. Other possible examination languages are listed in PO §4 (4).
-
Term paper (HA) and placement report (PB)
Term papers must be registered during the first registration period and submitted by the end of the second examination period in order to ensure maximum processing time. Placement reports may also be submitted outside of the regular examination periods. The deadlines for submissions are set by the examiner at the beginning of the examination.
-
Date of completion and assessment
The date of completion indicates the day on which the examination or coursework was completed by the student, while the date of assessment indicates when the assessment was carried out by the examiners. It is important that the date of completion is noted at the end of a module or course of study, as it marks the completion of the work. The date of assessment is not decisive in this regard.
-
Determining the date of completion
For written examinations, oral examinations or practical sports presentations, the date of completion corresponds to the examination date. For written assignments, the date of submission is the date of completion. For course-related examinations (VbP), the date of the last partial performance counts.
-
Approved aids
The decision on approved aids is made by the examiners. They inform the examination participants during the courses or via the module catalogue. These comprehensive guidelines and regulations ensure a structured and transparent examination process at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ.
Students who are unable to perform academic or examination work in the required form due to a disability or chronic illness can apply for compensation for disadvantages or request aids.
-
Supplementary assessment in the final examination attempt
If a written examination or multiple-choice examination (K/KA) in the final examination attempt was graded as ‘failed’ due to poor performance, a supplementary examination will be offered. This final opportunity allows students to improve their performance in order to continue their studies with a minimum grade of ‘4.0’ or a pass. The supplementary examination covers the content of the original written examination. A supplementary assessment is only possible if the final examination attempt was actually taken. If the final examination attempt was missed by students without excuse, there is no possibility of a supplementary examination and the corresponding examination is definitively failed.
Omissions, withdrawals and deadline extensions for examinations
- Absence and withdrawal
Absence refers to failure to appear for a registered examination or missing a submission deadline. Without a recognised valid reason (withdrawal request), this leads to an unexcused withdrawal (RTU), which is counted as a ‘fail’ and costs one examination attempt. If a valid reason is accepted, an excused withdrawal (RTE) is granted and no examination attempt is lost. - Valid reasons and evidence
A valid reason, such as illness, must be reported immediately. This is done with a medical certificate or other relevant documents, for example in the case of a child's illness. The body responsible under §3 of the examination regulations decides on the acceptance of valid reasons. Students should report their reasons quickly and without delay, especially in cases of illness, where it is recommended to contact the doctor by telephone. - Procedure for non-attendance and discontinuation
If students do not take an examination or if they have to abort it, examiners mark this as non-attendance (NER) or discontinuation (ABG) in the QIS system. Without a recognised reason, this becomes an unexcused withdrawal (RTU). - Extension of submission deadlines
In important cases, an extension of the processing deadline may be requested and approved by the competent body in accordance with §3 of the examination regulations. If the extension is disproportionate, a new topic may be issued. - Different certificates and costs
Normal medical certificates are usually sufficient, but in exceptional cases a certificate from a public health officer may also be required. Fees for certificates are to be borne by the students. In case of illness, it is recommended to use the form provided on the LUH website under Examination Information for your degree programme. - Decision procedure and notification
Decisions on withdrawal requests are made within two weeks, and the result can be viewed in the grade transcript. If the request is rejected, the student will be notified in writing. These guidelines ensure that all LUH students are subject to the same conditions in the event of absences, withdrawals and deadline extensions, and provide a clear procedure for various scenarios.
Grade recording
The deadline for assessing examination results is usually one month. For examinations that take place towards the end of the examination period, this deadline is at least 12 days.
Degree programmes with hearing procedures vs. attempt count
Hearing procedure during studies
The hearing procedure is an alternative system for monitoring study progress that can be used instead of the traditional attempt count. Students in such a system must meet certain criteria in order to prove their study progress (e.g. minimum number of credit points per semester).
Differences from the attempt count
In degree programmes with an attempt count, students are not required to earn a certain number of credit points per semester. They have a certain number of attempts available for each examination (usually 3). If the last attempt is not passed, the degree programme or subject is considered definitively failed.
In the hearing procedure, students must earn a minimum number of credit points per semester (e.g. 15 credit points). Exams can be repeated an unlimited number of times. If the required credit points are not achieved, the programme is considered failed. Students can then submit an application for suspension of the conditions and provide important reasons. In this case, additional counselling will be provided by your respective faculty. If the application for suspension of the conditions is rejected, an application for a hearing must be submitted. Three such applications are permitted within the Bachelor's programme and two within the Master's programme.
