Flexible learning modules recommended by the EU broaden university and doctoral studies as well as lifelong learning.

Since 2022, the EU has recommended the use of micro-credentials – small, clearly delineated teaching units with transparent skills acquisition. These flexible formats are now undergoing targeted expansion at ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ (LUH). A micro-credential generally involves 1 to 10 credit points (CPs), and several modules can be combined to make up a micro degree programme consisting of 10 to 30 CPs. Successful completion is confirmed in writing (micro-credential) or with a certificate (micro degree), and is recognised across Europe.

As a university, LUH is able to offer micro-credentials and micro degree programmes not just for bachelor’s and master’s students, but also for doctoral candidates and postdocs. It is thus adopting the mandate of piloting and certifying innovative formats. At the same time, the high degree of flexibility necessitates clear goals: What is LUH already using these formats for? Where can the faculties, schools and future labs use them in future?

Potential areas of application at LUH:

  • Additional qualification on cross-cutting topics such as sustainability and AI during university studies
  • Lifelong learning of new technologies for alumni – for example, AI applications or new research findings
  • Additional qualification for doctoral candidates or postdocs in an Excellence area
  • Acquisition of (international) junior researchers through the provision of English-language qualifications for doctoral candidates and postdocs
  • Preservation of teaching content even in the case of reduced demand through the transformation of teaching offers into on-demand micro-credentials and micro degree programmes
  • Supplementation of existing teaching offers through additional qualifications in fields that will play a role in future but are not yet embedded in the curricula

The list of potential applications doesn’t end there: through the strategically defined and judicious use of micro-credentials and micro degree programmes, LUH could make its study programmes more flexible and deliver significant added value to selected target groups in future.

Overall, the formats support interdisciplinary cooperation and enrich LUH’s study programmes. The Leibniz AI Academy serves as an example of this: The format is also well suited to academic continuing education – for example, through the Centre for Continuing Education: .
